In community kitchens across South Australia, something warm and wonderfully simple is bringing people together. After Meals on Wheels SA volunteers finish preparing and packing meals for clients, many branches roll straight into a beloved tradition — baking fresh, homemade scones to share over a cuppa.

These scones aren’t just delicious; they’ve become an unofficial South Australian icon. Much like the Balfours Frog Cake, FruChocs or a classic Coopers Pale Ale, the volunteer scone occupies a special place in local hearts. It’s a ritual that rewards a busy morning’s work and creates a space for connection, laughter and friendship.
And the “secret recipe”? There isn’t one. Each branch has its own favourite version — from light and fluffy classics to fruity twists — all baked with pride, care and plenty of personality.

Do you want to taste the “world’s best” scone?
Meals on Wheels SA is now celebrating the volunteer scone as the star of its latest recruitment campaign — not because it’s fancy, but because of the feeling behind it. Volunteers often call that first bite after a busy morning “the world’s best” — a reward wrapped in gratitude, connection and the joy of giving back.
Volunteering offers many benefits: purpose, community, new friendships and that unmistakable sense of doing something meaningful. Many people say they feel happier and more connected when they volunteer.
