A new national survey is calling on Australians aged 65 years and over to help shape how older people are supported to eat well while ageing in their home.

Launched by the Maggie Beer Foundation, this first‑of‑its‑kind survey invites older people to share their everyday experiences with food. From shopping and cooking to appetite, affordability and the simple joy of eating.

While most older Australians want to remain in their own homes, eating well isn’t always easy. Reduced appetite, smaller meals or a fading interest in cooking can all lead to malnutrition, often without being noticed.

The survey is part of the HomePlate Project, a national initiative exploring what supports, and what hinders, enjoying good food at home. With 96 per cent of Australians over 65 living independently, the project aims to hear directly from people ageing in their own communities.

The survey is:

  • open to Australians aged 65+ living at home
  • confidential
  • quick to complete (around 10 minutes).

Good food nourishes more than the body, it brings pleasure, culture, memory and social connection. Insights from the HomePlate Project will help shape practical ways to support older people to eat well, stay connected and remain independent.
