The Rural City of Murray Bridge has proudly delivered a project that supported community members, through peer-led workshops, increasing community understanding of and confidence in completing their own Advance Care Directive (ACD).

One of the many memorable road trips the JP’s and Project Officer took together during the project.

The Rural City of Murray Bridge Advance Care Directives Project built on previous ACD projects led by Councils within Southern Fleurieu, Western Adelaide, Southern Adelaide and Adelaide Hills.

Under the leadership of Project Officer Debbie Burton, the regional initiative delivered highly successful workshops across the Rural City of Murray Bridge, Mid Murray, and Coorong Council regions between 2023-2025.

Free workshops were held in Murray Bridge, Meningie, Tailem Bend, Peake, Mannum, Walker Flat, and Loxton, reaching a total of 329 community members.

Participants explored aspects of the ACD, considered what was important to them and had access to relevant information and guidance so that they could complete their own ACD — a process that many found empowering and eye-opening.

A key factor in the program’s success was the generous support of five dedicated and passionate Justices of the Peace (JPs) who volunteered countless hours. Their commitment ensured that attendees had immediate access to a JP to sign off their completed documents.

All five JPs have since reported a notable increase in community members visiting Council offices to have their ACD signed, reflecting the strong community engagement and positive impact of the workshops.

Participants overwhelmingly expressed that the workshops increased their understanding of the purpose and importance of an ACD, with many surprised to learn that anyone over the age of 18 years old is eligible to complete one—not just older adults.

The project not only raised awareness about ACDs but has empowered individuals across the region to have important discussions and to make their future wishes known.

The Rural City of Murray Bridge Advance Care Directives Workshop Project was supported by Office for Ageing Well, Department of Human Services and Health Services Programs, SA Health.
