Getting around is about much more than simply travelling from one place to another.

For many older people, transport choices are closely linked to independence, staying connected to the community, and being able to participate in the activities that matter most. As people's circumstances change over time, the way we choose to travel may change too.

A new research project being delivered by COTA SA's The Plug-in is exploring how older people in regional South Australia make decisions about getting around the community, and what influences those decisions.

The project is taking a different approach to traditional transport discussions. Rather than focusing on roads, infrastructure or services alone, the project is exploring the personal, social and practical factors that influence transport choices. Including understanding why people choose particular ways of travelling, what makes some transport options appealing or unappealing, and how people feel about using alternatives to driving when they are available.

The research is focusing on five regional locations across South Australia: Victor Harbor, Kadina, Port Pirie, Whyalla and Mount Gambier. If you are aged 50+ and live in one of these locations and would like to share your experiences through a workshop or one-to-one interview, please register to be involved.

The project team is interested in hearing from people with a wide range of experiences, including those who drive, walk, cycle, use public or community transport, or rely on lifts from family and friends.

The findings will contribute to a better understanding of the factors that shape transport choices for older people living in regional communities. Insights gathered through the project will inform practical resources designed to support older people, as well as guidance for councils, service providers and policymakers.

Through your contribution you are raising the voices of older people and supporting the important work of COTA SA. If you have any questions, please contact The Plug-in on 08 8224 5526 or connect@theplugin.com.au.

The project is supported by Office for Ageing Well through an Impact Research Grant for Ageing Well.
