The upcoming sales season is a great opportunity to snap up the savings before Christmas arrives. Shopping online helps with avoiding the crowds, but it comes with added risks. Don’t let scammers ruin your holiday cheer. Follow our tips for shopping safely online.

Purchase from trustworthy websites
Some websites aren’t what they appear to be. You might see a website or product promoted on social media, but instead of clicking on the link it’s best to do your own search in a browser. That way, you can avoid being directed to a fake site or a seller with a poor reputation. Also, ask yourself “Do I really need this item?”. Remember, if it seems too good to be true, it’s probably a dodgy deal.
Only purchase from reputable retailers and always check that a website is legitimate before ordering. Look for the padlock symbol on the left of the search bar to confirm that a website is secure before handing over any personal or banking details.
Check independent product reviews
Before you decide on a particular product, make sure you read the reviews. Reviews can provide valuable insights that could save you from spending money you’ll regret. For example, you might learn that a shirt you want is made from low quality fabric or a toaster has a short lifespan.
Never limit yourself to only reading reviews on the retailer’s own website or social media. These may be false or unreliable. Instead, look for product reviews posted to independent review platforms and online forums that can’t be vetted by the business. Beware reviews that are overly positive or negative.
Make sure your order will arrive on time
Getting that last minute present shopping in before Christmas? Avoid disaster by checking that your order will be delivered in time. Most businesses provide Christmas delivery cut-off dates that specify the last date you should order by to have your package arrive in time for Christmas. Before you buy, consider delays and make sure you are confident your purchase will be delivered before the big day, so nobody is left disappointed.
Be cautious when purchasing from an overseas business
Having products from across the world arrive at your doorstep is convenient but increases the risk of complications if your purchase doesn’t go as planned. Always take the time to consider if what you buy is covered by the Australian Consumer Law (ACL).
The ACL covers your purchase from an overseas retailer if they offer goods or services directly to Australian consumers. You’re not covered by the ACL when you buy from an overseas retailer if:
- their products and services aren’t sold directly to consumers in Australia, or
- you send your order to an overseas address before forwarding it on to your Australian address.
It may be harder to get a refund, repair or replacement from an overseas-based business. Not sure whether the business you want to purchase from operates in Australia? Check if they have an Australian Business Number on the ABN Lookup website.
Know your refund rights
Always read the returns policy before making a purchase so you know if you will be eligible for a refund.
Keep in mind that it’s not mandatory for businesses to offer change of mind refunds, unless this is what they promise to do in their refund policy. If you think there might be a need for you to return your purchase, for example if you’re buying clothing and are unsure about the size, check that you will be able to. Even if you’re sure about your purchase, remember that mistakes happen, so make the best decision to protect yourself from losing out.
Regardless of what a refund policy may say, you still have your basic entitlements under the ACL, such as the right to a refund, repair or replacement if the product or service doesn’t meet consumer guarantees. This includes items that are faulty and products that aren’t as they were advertised.
