The award recognises an individual, community group or organisation that can demonstrate tangible actions against ageism and is promoting the value of older people and ageing well.
It is the fourth year Office for Ageing Well has offered the Tackling Ageism Award.
Last year, the Australian Refugee Association was presented with the Award for its work to support refugees and migrants to actively participate in the community. Its Zimala Project (meaning ‘fellowship’ in Arabic) provided more than 100 men aged 50 and over with cultural and social experiences, helping to overcome loneliness and tackle ageism.
The 2021 winner was Adelaide researcher and clinician Unyime Jasper, honoured for his efforts to overcome the disempowerment some older people face in hospital systems.
In 2020 Kerry Jones won the inaugural award for her leadership of The Australian Centre for Social Innovation (TACSI) in developing programs designed to reimagine the future of ageing well.
Individuals, community groups and non-profit organisations actively working to challenge ageism and highlight the value of older people and ageing well are encouraged to apply for the 2023 award.
Nominations for the Community Achievement Awards close on Wednesday 9 August and they will be presented in November 2023. Government organisations and programs are not eligible to apply.
