Across South Australia, PlayForever is bringing generations together through shared play experiences that build connection, inclusion and wellbeing. PlayForever is the name coined by Playgroup SA for its intergenerational playgroups, which welcome older adults, young children and families to connect through creativity, conversation and fun.

Alongside these programs, a research project titled “PlayForever: an exploration of participation in intergenerational playgroups in diverse South Australian communities” is investigating how and why people take part in intergenerational playgroups, and what helps these initiatives thrive in different local settings.

Led by researchers from Torrens University Australia in partnership with Playgroup SA, the research focuses on participation, exploring what motivates older adults, families and carers to get involved, as well as identifying barriers that may limit engagement. Intergenerational playgroups provide welcoming spaces where participants of all ages can enjoy activities such as arts and crafts, music, games and storytelling, while learning from one another’s experiences.

Research has shown that intergenerational programs can offer wide-ranging benefits. Older adults often report increased social connection, a renewed sense of purpose and enjoyment, while children can develop confidence, empathy and positive attitudes towards ageing. Families and carers also value the friendships and support networks formed through shared play.

The research study been conducted in two South Australian intergenerational playgroups, held at two aged care sites, one in Adelaide and the other in regional South Australia. These sites are providing valuable insights into how local community culture, setting and support influence participation in intergenerational playgroups. People who attend the playgroups have been invited to share their experiences through surveys and conversations, helping researchers better understand what makes these groups welcoming and sustainable.

Early insights from the research highlight that participation in intergenerational playgroups is influenced by accessible and welcoming spaces, skilled facilitation and a sense of connection and belonging.

Findings from the project will inform the development of a participation framework designed to strengthen intergenerational playgroups across South Australia and encourage broader community involvement. By supporting opportunities for people of all ages to connect, the project aims to reduce loneliness and enhance wellbeing in diverse communities.
