New laws for retirement villages in South Australia will commence from 2 February 2026. These laws will strengthen consumer protections for current and prospective retirement village residents.

The new laws update the Retirement Villages Act 2016 and Retirement Villages Regulations 2017 and respond to recommendations of an independent statutory review. The new laws have been informed by extensive public consultation involving residents, prospective residents, the retirement villages sector, and a rigorous parliamentary process.
What’s changing?
These new reforms will increase consumer protection, improve village administration, strengthen the standards applying to retirement village operators and village staff and strengthen the powers and functions of the Retirement Villages Registrar. The new laws will also improve transparency to help future residents make informed choices.
