It’s Thursday evening and members of the Second-Wind Ensemble are gathering at Pembroke School’s music suite for their weekly rehearsal.
They help set up the room with chairs and music stands for about 40 musicians.
The youngest member, in her 20s, puts together her bassoon while others pull out trumpets, saxophones, trombones and euphoniums.
Other instruments include flute and clarinet sections, a bass clarinet, an oboe, French horn, bass guitar and tuned percussion.
The band is seeking new members who play flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, French horn and percussion in a welcoming, friendly and supportive group with an active musical and social calendar.
Music Director Josie Hawkes, OAM, leads rehearsals in preparation for regular performances at community events and band festivals.
Second-Wind Ensemble’s next performance in October includes a wide variety of musical styles and genres from classical to folk songs, and popular music such as The Entertainer by Scott Joplin and a dance mix by the American band Earth, Wind and Fire.
In 2023, Second-Wind Ensemble will turn 25, having been formed in 1998 by well-known musician, educator and mentor, Bob Hower, who directed the Elder Conservatorium Wind Orchestra.
Members come from all walks of life and share a passion for playing music together. Many have retired from successful careers and enjoy playing in a band with like-minded people.
There is a broad range of abilities with a good mix of experienced musicians and those who are newer to their instrument.
Annual performances include an Adelaide Festival Fringe concert, participation in band festivals and other community events.
