It’s a great time to venture outside in the City of Salisbury and participate in the interesting programs and activities on offer, within the community gardens at Paralowie and Para Hills Hub.

Tania, from the Para Hills Hub Community Garden, explains that getting into the garden is not always about the garden. While some participants come to actively participate by growing seedlings, preparing garden beds, planting and harvesting, others come along for the social aspect and are more than happy to engage in conversations as they wander through the garden. It’s important to remember while gardening is great for our body and physical fitness it is also of great benefit to our mind. Getting outside, enjoying the gardens and each other’s company is a pleasant side effect.

Through the Connect and Thrive project, supported by Office for Ageing Well, Para Hills Hub Community Garden has regular gardening sessions on Tuesday from 10.00am where you can join our friendly gardeners for activities in the garden and Wednesday mornings from 9:30am for our Fresh Start Build Your Garden sessions, where we cover topics such as the benefits of worm farms, growing seeds and garden maintenance. Participants can also join in on one of our interesting projects such as growing edibles and flowers and building raised beds. There are artist creations, music and lots of laughter!

A new initiative for the Para Hills Community Hub Community Garden in 2022 is the launch of their seed library. The seed library offers residents the opportunity to access free seeds for vegetables and herbs that have been tried and tested in the community garden. Residents will be able to take packets of seeds home to grow and in return, save some seeds from their plants and return it to the library for the next growing season.

With the Para Hills Library also being in the Hub, it’s the perfect opportunity for residents to grab some seeds and borrow a book at the same time, or join us in the community garden to learn some new skills including how to grow the seeds you have borrowed. You can also come along and help stock our new seed library by donating seeds, making packets and undertaking seed saving in the community garden.

Regular programs run each Tuesday from 10.00am to 12.00pm and Wednesday from 9.30am to 11.30am at the Para Hills Community Hub, 18-22 Wilkinson Road, Para Hills.  These programs are offered during school term time only. For further enquiries, contact the Para Hills Community Hub on 8406 8560.

Keep an eye on City of Salisbury Facebook page and Eventbrite for events.

We look forward to meeting you!
