Basketball SA are encouraging senior men and women to rediscover the joys of basketball. With proven physical, mental, and social benefits, basketball is a positive way in which seniors can maintain their vitality, social interaction, and independence.

75-year-old Bob Lines rarely misses training, games or shots. He is an inspiration to us all.
Basketball offers a dynamic way to stay active; and improve cardiovascular health, balance, and coordination. Regular play can help reduce the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis. Additionally, the sport’s ‘fast-paced’ nature promotes cognitive function, enhancing memory, focus, and decision-making skills.
Beyond the physical benefits, basketball fosters social connections, combating isolation—a common challenge among seniors. Teamwork and camaraderie on and off the court create a sense of belonging, boosting mental well-being and self-esteem. There are also opportunities to travel to interstate and overseas competitions if you wish.
“Basketball isn’t just for the young—it’s a lifelong sport,” says the men’s coach, Rod Bauer. “We are seeing incredible transformations in men who lace up their sneakers and join the game. It is never too late to start. We will nurture your talents slowly. You do not have to be fit or injury free to play – it is for everyone”.
Senior men and women are encouraged to take the first step toward a healthier, more active lifestyle. Come out for a trial at a practice at the State Basketball Centre (Northwest corner of the showgrounds) on Wednesdays at 9:30am for men and Tuesdays at 10:00am for women. Women are also welcome to join the Wednesday session.
Men over 70 (i.e. 67 up) play games at 5:10pm on Monday, and men over 60 play games at 6:00pm at the State Basketball Centre. Men over 60 play games at 6:00pm and 6:50pm on Thursday at the Springbank Sports Centre (Corner of Goodwood Road and Daws Road, Pasadena).
