To weave is to connect the fabric of the land with the hands of its children. Nature Festival 2023 presents Traditional Owner, Kaurna Elder and weaving artist, Elaine Magias.

Elaine Magias, who carries the craft and wisdom of 2,500 generations of Grandmothers, has been hosting workshops and sharing a colourful journey of texture, creativity, and cultural discovery with curious attendees for years. Elaine guides participants through the hardest parts of weaving like starting a weave, and supports all the way through to adding material, changing thread, building three dimensional shapes, and finishing.

Elaine’s workshops are not limited to weaving alone, she provides a holistic cultural experience including the rich diversity of Aboriginal languages, stories, art, cultural practices, cuisine, and beliefs. For Elaine, her commitment to sharing her traditions is necessary for reconciliation and for preserving her culture.

During Nature Festival 2023, Elaine will be hosting two workshops situated within the leafy grounds of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens, on Sunday the 1st of October at 11am-1pm and Sunday the 8th of October at 11am-1pm. Discover the culture, history, and the art of weaving in this workshop and immerse yourself in a colourful tradition of texture, creativity and cultural learning. This is a hands-on experience that promises to leave a lasting imprint on the hearts of all who attend.
